Give the Gift of Research – Help Save Lives this Christmas

 In News

This Christmas, ALLG launched our Christmas Appeal in support of life-saving clinical trial research for blood cancer patients. We have a patient-centric focus, and patients are the driving force behind our clinical trial research as we aim for a cure for blood cancer. Our 1400 + haematologist members are knowledgeable experts who work across our 75 + trial portfolio to deliver innovative and less invasive life-saving treatments to patients like Lauren Jenkins who was given a shocking diagnosis that turned her live upside down.

Lauren’s Personal Cancer Story

In August 2023, Lauren a mother of 2 daughters was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Primary Mediastinal B Cell Lymphoma, an extremely rare form of Lymphoma generally affecting younger women.

Like most in her position, Lauren was blindsided by her diagnosis.

“I have always been very careful about how I treated my body and was fortunate to never fall sick, even in winter. When I started getting sick and was later diagnosed with a blood cancer, I was completely and utterly shocked.”

Lauren’s treating team informed her about the ALLG’s NHL35 PACIFIC clinical trial, enabling her to access a new combination treatment of standard chemotherapy with the immunotherapy drug Pembrolizumab. Lauren made the decision to participate in the NHL35 PACIFIC Trial.

Lauren said, “Going on this trial was the best decision I have ever made – to be able to have access to both immunotherapy and chemotherapy in my treatment plan was an offer I could not refuse. The drugs and treatment programs offered to patients during clinical trials come at no cost and participation in trials may give patients opportunities and hope they would not have otherwise.”

Excitingly, after 13 months of treatment, she is now in remission, and back to her job as a part-time PE Teacher.

Did you know?

Blood cancer is the second biggest group of cancer deaths in Australia, with 1 in 5 people not surviving past 5 years post-diagnosis. Research is the ONLY way to advance new treatments and clinical trials, such as the ones conducted by ALLG’s member researchers – they are the crucial link between a discovery made in the laboratory and a new treatment reaching patients.

This Christmas, Give the Gift of Research. Your donation will give hope to the nearly 20,000 Australians diagnosed with blood cancer annually and ensure ALLG can continue delivering life-changing treatments to people in need.

100% of your donation goes to advance world-leading clinical trial research to generate new and better evidence-based treatment options for patients with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
